American restaurants have franchised throughout the world. American restaurants offer recognisable cuisines and fast foods like fries, chicken, burgers, wings, milkshakes, pizzas that are popularised from watching American movies and TV shows.

We have rounded up 5 of the largest American restaurants in Sri Lanka.

  1. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)

KFC is the biggest global chicken franchise serving the world famous Colonel Sanders’ secret recipe for over 60 years. The secret is a blend of 11 herbs and spices, which are safely stored at the headquarters in Kentucky, USA.

KFC started operations in Sri Lanka in 1995, the first restaurant opened in Majestic City. KFC has since expanded to 40 restaurants across the Sri Lanka. KFC is very popular with tourists and locals making it one of the fastest growing restaurants in Sri Lanka

  1. Burger King

Burger King (BK) is an American multinational chain of hamburger restaurants. The company was founded in 1957 by James McLamore and David Edgerton in Florida, USA.

Burger King announced its grand entrance in to the Sri Lanka restaurant scene in 2013. Burger King opened three restaurants located in Rajagiriya, Mount Lavinia and Colpetty. Burger King Sri Lanka has since expanded to 22 restaurants in Sri Lanka.

Burger King is known for its whoppers, which is a specialised sandwich made of beef and cheese.

  1. Subway 

Subway was founded in 1965 by  Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck. The first restaurant opened in Connecticut, USA.

Subway is the largest submarine sandwich chain with presence in over 42,000 restaurants in 107 counties. Subway launched its Sri Lanka restaurant in 2014.

  1. McDonald’s 

Mc Donald’s is an American fast food restaurant company. The first Mc Donald’s restaurant was opened in the year 1948 by siblings Maurice (Mac) and Richard Mc Donald in San Bernardino California.

McDonald’s is one of the world’s leading international food chain restaurants with over 37,000 locations in over 100 countries. Mc Donald’s is well known for serving fries, big mac (hamburger), quarter pounder, chicken nuggets and egg muffin.

The first McDonald’s restaurant in Sri Lanka opened 1998. McDonald’s has established 6 restaurants in Sri Lanka located in Colombo city, with many more in the pipeline. 

  1. Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut is an American restaurant chain and international franchise which was founded in the year 1958 in Wichita, Kansas USA. Pizza Hut was founded by two Wichita State University students and brothers Dan and Frank Carney. The brothers began franchising in 1959.

Pizza Hut Restaurant opened in Sri Lanka in 1993, becoming the first international food chain to operate a restaurant in Sri Lanka.
